ParticipantsCouncillor Jeremy Hardman unveils the plaque helped by William and Alex Richards, sons of the Parish Clerk, Mrs Sally Richards. They are watched by the Chairman and councillors of Ruscombe Parish Council, Steven Loyd, Wokingham Tree Warden Network coordinator; his colleague, Councillor Graham Hook; neighbours and WDVTA members.
NotesThis tree is planted in a green sward immediately to the west of Ruscombe church. This grassy area, once part of a much larger village green, has over the years been the site of many events including, more recently, annual Maypole dancing, in Tudor dress, by children of Polehampton School. Beyond the open area is a fine copse of veteran oaks and a more ancient yew, possibly about 500 years old, grows in the churchyard. There has been a church on this site since medieval times and the buildings have a fascinating history. They incorporate incorporate a late 12th or early 13th century chancel in which can be seen restored paintings of saints. The nave is built of brick and dates from 1638, one of the earliest of such churches.
